What engineers look for before they apply

In short

1

.

Engineers choose an employer by what they will get to build.

2

.

Industrial companies have more of that work than anyone, but most of it happens behind factory doors.

3

.

Show the problem, the people and the technology running, and the right engineers come looking.

You are electrifying a product line nobody outside your factory has seen. The engineers you want are looking for exactly that kind of work. The job is to make sure they see it.

What do engineers actually look for?

Ask engineers where they want to work and the answers are rarely about perks. They want to know what they will build. Which problem it solves. Who they will sit next to, and whether the work will ever leave the drawing board.

That is good news for industry. Real products, real scale and real problems in electrification, automation and materials are exactly what industrial companies have. The work is already there. It is just behind a door.

Why great engineering stays out of sight

Industrial technology is described for customers who already know what they are buying. Spec sheets and trade fair stands are written for the buyer, not for the graduate engineer deciding where to spend the next five years.

So some of the most interesting engineering in the country stays inside the companies doing it, while brands with simpler products fill the feed.

Engineers apply to problems worth solving.

Show the work, not the values

Employer branding often starts with values. Engineers start with the work. Four things move them.

  • The problem before the solution. What was hard, and why it mattered.

  • The people, by name. The engineer who solved it, in their own words.

  • The technology running. A test, a prototype, a machine moving. Proof beats renderings.

  • The right place. Where engineers already are: LinkedIn, technical universities, student projects and events where technology runs for real.

What racing taught us about being seen

A race car is the most visible piece of engineering there is. Every change the team makes is tested in public on a fixed date, and the result is published within the hour. When we developed and built one of the world's first electric touring cars ourselves, the engineering became the story.

Industrial teams can borrow that without a racetrack. Show the work while it happens, not only when it is finished.

Where to start

Pick one project your engineers are proud of. Film the test. Interview the person who made it work. Publish it where engineers spend time. Then do it again next month. A steady rhythm of real work does more than one big campaign.

Questions

What is employer branding for an industrial company?

Making the work visible to the people you want to hire: the problems, the technology and the team, told by the engineers themselves.

Where should industrial companies reach engineers?

Where they already spend time: LinkedIn, technical universities, student projects and events where technology runs for real.

How can PWR help?

PWR Agency finds the story in the engineering and gets it in front of the people who need to see it, future employees included.
