In 2012, Peter "Poker" Wallenberg and Daniel Haglöf entered one car in a Swedish touring car series, with Daniel at the wheel. Behind that one car sat a bigger question: could you build a racing team the way you build a company?
Most sports split the field in two. Motorsport does not. The car does not know who is driving it, and the stopwatch does not care. That is why we have always picked our drivers the same way: the seat goes to the person who can make the car go fastest.
Volvo CE had decided to lead the electrification of construction equipment. The machines were ready. The hard part was making customers, dealers and future engineers believe it. In 2022 we gave them a place to see it happen, at full speed and in front of a crowd.
There is a version of innovation that lives in meeting rooms. Frameworks, roadmaps, pilots that never quite become products. Everyone agrees on the direction. Nobody wants to go first. We have never been good at that version.
Every industrial company we meet has good technology. Many have excellent technology. The ones that lead the next decade will be the ones that get it into the world first.
Electrification, automation, new materials and supply security are arriving at the same time. The window to lead is shorter than most product cycles, and it is open right now.
You are electrifying a product line nobody outside your factory has seen. The engineers you want are looking for exactly that kind of work. The job is to make sure they see it.
